O3A Decoding VST

You can make many different types of mix from the same O3A master. The O3A Decoding library is a set of VST plugins that extract high quality mixes in various standard formats from 3D O3A ones.

These plugins include decoders for 5.1, 7.1, 7.1.2 (Dolby Atmos), 3D7.1, Auro-3D (9.1, 10.1, 11.1 and 13.1), IMAX (5.0, 6.0 and 12.0), Cube, Hexagon, Octagon and Quad speaker layouts. In addition to speaker layouts, there are decoders for "binaural" headphone output, Quad Binaural, ambisonic UHJ stereo and output to N3D. Other tools include a meter, a "brickwall" limiter and a stereo crosstalk cancellation plugin.

These are higher order ambisonic (HOA) VST plugins for macOS (10.7+) or Windows (Win7+) running on 32bit/64bit Intel. They can be hosted in various Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). To work with O3A, the DAW needs to handle tracks with at least 16 channels (or even 24 for the 22.2 decoder). Right now, this means that Nuendo and Cubase do not work with these plugins. But the list of DAWs that do work is growing. Your options include Reaper, Pyramix and Max/MSP.

Please note that as part of our Version Two release, these plugins have changed so they expect ambisonics encoded using SN3D rather than FuMa as used previously. Converters between FuMa and SN3D are available in the free O3A Core plugin library (included).

Highlights

Decoding 3D O3A Audio

O3A mixes are not tied to particular speaker layouts, but at some stage you'll want to "decode" the mix to listen to it! This library provides a set of decoders for standard formats. There are a few simpler decoders in the O3A Core library too, which is included, along with an injector for material that uses the FuMa ambisonic convention rather than the SN3D convention used by these plugins.

Multichannel Decoders

The decoders for surround sound layouts (5.1, 7.1, 7.1.2, 3D7.1, Auro-3D, IMAX, 22.2 and some others) have been built using the Rapture3D decoder generator. This uses some very sophisticated (and patented) techniques to produce high quality sound over a broad, stable listening area.

As with Rapture3D, three decoding methods are supported:

  • Basic - resilient, portable decoding.
  • Reconstruction - adds soundfield control.
  • Tinted Reconstruction - adds HRTF processing.

Headphone Decoder

This decoder uses the Rapture3D's Amber HRTF data set to produce binaural 3D on headphones. This HRTF has been built using a parameter-space average of a large number of heads to produce a "standard" HRTF that works for many people.

This can also be combined with the "Stereo Crosstalk Cancellation" plugin to produce a surprisingly wide stereo image (at a rather small sweet spot) from stereo speakers.


Metering and Loudness

These decoder plugins are designed to give roughly consistent loudness according to the BS1770, R128 and A/85 loudness standards where they apply, and similar loudness where they do not. A metering plugin is provided which can provide an estimatedLUFS value that does not depend on the decoder in use.

This plugin reduces stereo crosstalk at a small sweet spot to increase the perceived stereo width there. This can produce a surprisingly wide stereo image (at a rather small sweet spot) from stereo speakers.

O3A VST Plugin Technical Requirements

Please check that everything is okay here before purchasing software.

Operating System

Supported versions of Microsoft Windows are Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. Supported versions of Apple macOS are 10.7 or later, Intel only. The plugins are available in 32bit or 64bit forms on both platforms (packaged as a Universal Binary on macOS).

VST Host

These plugins are VST 2 plugins, and require a VST 2 host to operate.

These plugins do not work with all VST 2 hosts. In particular, Cubase or Nuendo currently cannot use them. We hope this will change, but in the meantime you can use other hosts such as Reaper, Pyramix or Max/MSP. The reason for this limitation is that the O3A plugins need large numbers of channels on their input or output busses. Check the individual plugins for the channel counts they need, but all of the O3A plugins need at least 16 channels on each track, and a few need more (e.g. the 22.2 decoder).

PC Hardware

Please check your PC meets the following requirements:

  • Intel Pentium D CPU or better.
  • 200MB of free disk space.
  • Internal network card.

Internet Connection Required

These plugins require an Internet Connection for license activation and verification. We don't really like this, but we can't think of a better way to discourage piracy! Please don't hack our code, it's taken a lot of effort to get it this far...

Successful license verification isn't required every time you use the software, but it is needed during installation and needs to succeed once every couple of weeks to keep the license fresh.

The license can be "revoked" to remove it from one machine so it can be moved on to another. You should also do this if you're updating your system in case the machine appears to have changed identity.

Permissions

You'll need administrator permissions while installing on Windows. The software won't install properly using a "restricted" account.
